Sorry to hear that. Didn't mention it above but mine is a 4x4 as well but not a Z71. So, guess the only difference is with the Z's stiffer suspension, differentials, and your tonneau?

 

I just happened to wander into this site while searching for other information a couple months or so ago. And, being a new owner kinda became interested in what the root cause(s) may be. The problems and their subsequent solutions are so varied it's impossible to focus on one problem as "the problem". But, I do see some possibilities; some appear just normal new vehicle problems of a wide variety of causes which is why nobody has come across a primary issue to go after. Some problems appear to be on vehicles that have been tinkered with such as lifts, oversize wheels and tires, etc. lastly, I'm wondering if road surfaces are causing some of the vibrations? I know that here in the Dallas Metroplex road surfaces, especially those fairly new, are concrete and thereby have expansion strips about every eight feet and have horizontal or squiggly traction grooves in the surface. The traction grooves are not very deep but they appear only about an inch apart and thereby transmitt a small amount of hormonic vibration into a vehicle. I've felt it in virtually every vehicle I've ever rode in. Could some of these problems be cause by road surface? Just wondering....

I have 2 sets of rims and tires, 18's with GY Wranglers and 22's with Bridgestone Duellers , both have the vibration and both are factory sets. I have driven of roads that were paved the night before, and at times on those roads, the vibe has never been worse, so I don't think road surface conditions play much of a factor.

 

 

Where I live the interstate is turnpike so you have to pay to get on which makes for a better surface. It's smooth blacktop which I drive almost daily in my Chevy Traverse and it's smooth as glass. There is a section of interstate going into the city that is concrete and my truck bounces so bad on it my 5 year old thinks the inflection in her voice is funny (which of course I find irritating...not my daughter but the bouncing made by the truck). My F150 I traded for this Silverado never bounced like this truck does. My F-150 was a FX4 so it had the stiffer suspension. Other than the spray-in bed liner and the tonneau cover, my truck is all factory. No lifts, factory tires (2nd set).

Isn't that the truth lol. My biggest dilemma is, no matter where I drive on the highway, the ride is smooth for the first 5-10 miles, then it starts shaking. Just trying to figure out what would change? I know psi goes up as the tires get hot but no matter what psi I keep them at it still does it. What else could heat up and or change after a bit of driving? So frustrating and puzzling.

the engine warms up :freak: . I actually looked at the pressure in my tires, which have dropped due to the cold, i need to raise them all about 4 psi

 

"Increased insurance and repair costs. If you get a door ding you can't massage it out like a "fix a dent" type person would etc. I do agree with you though that all major manufacturers will eventually move to alum bodies, I just don't know if I want to be an early adopter or not."

 

I'm waiting for a good ole big ole Texas hail storm this spring. Then, being you can't swing a dead chicken around here without hitting a dozen pickups, we will have an opportunity for a valid side by side comparison.

EDIT:

I called the body shop I use here in Mass, and he confirmed what the videos & article says..... the Aluminum takes twice as long to repair, and costs twice as much because of it

I was reading the first section about frame/axles/shocks and improved leafs.
I squashed my suspension right away. And feel the road pretty good now. still loves the way it drives:)

So for 2016, all the bad parts should be phased out in theory, but if it is an inherit design issue then the 2016's are screwed as well. A lot of people don't have the vibe so this leads me to believe it is a bad run of parts spanning multiple years instead of the frame. Why I am curious is they are running anywhere from 7k-13k off 2016 Sierras and Silverados in my area right now and I might be interested if these new ones don't shake. I have seen a few 2016's pop up on here, but one gentlemen said his was cured with a RF balance. Who knows.

They sure talk about reducing vibrations alot and how everything is stiffer. Everything is to stiffer on these frames, thats why you feel vibrations. Even the stiffer leaf spring bushings. Something has to absorb vibrations, rubber always worked well and all the bushings are stiffer now. That article shines a bright light for me. And like hotrodz37 said they sure are offering a lot of discounts on these trucks, especially the 2016 this early in the year. Just my 2 cents worth.

haha they want to get them gone before they are stuck with all of the vibrators lol

 

I only have the vibration at 55+ when at WOT. Is this common or is at all throttle levels? As in letting it slowly shift thru the gears.

I have vibe at basically all speeds, so only at WOT i would say is odd

Anybody try max sidewall tire pressure as a test?

I think thats 51psi on mine.... I would assume that would make the waaayyyyyyyy worse, but I am going to be adjusting the pressure in my tires tomorrow morning, so I will try doing max then reduce later and compare

the truck is taught. I like how the truck rides personally. I feel Chevy did a great job in creating a full size truck that handles much sportier, It's precision indeed and needs quality parts to make it work. Sucks for a few when it doesn't work right.

GM has classes for techs to take on troubleshooting vibrations. got some insight on the techniques looking at these pages at Sandyblogs which is loaded with tech info etc.

This is the wildest thing. That Vibration absorber has been used by GM before! Long ago. 52 years ago in fact! In my 64 pontiac, it came with a 3 speed automatic called the "rotohydramatic" TH350 came out in 65. The "Slim jim" as it was called, had an internal torque converter, called a torus. Where the torque converter should be, they had a damper plate, essentially the same thing as the Vibration absorber!

New to forum. Did not know about vibration issues when I purchased.

1/4/16. bought new 15 Silverado exetened cab ltz 4x4 6.2. 20" wheels. Live 40 mins from dealer. Msrp 51k paid 38.5k. Did not test drive, 12 miles on it. Drove home was shaking. All tires 5lbs low..

1/5. Next day filled properly. Drove back n forth to work only. 2 miles away.

1/9. Following Sat drove across state and it was bad. My daughter was in back and started feeling sick. Wife in the front same. Could feel the seat vibrating.

1/11. Went to dealer 4 minutes from me and was told I'd have to go where I bought truck. Balancing falls on them but anything else they would take care of. Went to dealer I purchased from. Took me right in.312 miles on it. 2hrs later was told by service tech, could feel it the minute he drove it. RFB all tires and said it's fine. Took a short ride with him and could still feel vibration. He said the tires that are on it are aggressive and that's what I feel.( and said a lot more bs) Done with him, Asked for paperwork and was told its to new for that..had it at this point and walked out. Vibrated all the way home. Got home and noticed grease on door, handle, carpet, mat covered, window frame. Took pics. That night did a search and saw this forum. Wow. Would never bought it. Lesson learn.

1/12 call GM.( very nice person) Explained everything, 3way call with service manager 4 minutes from me and said to bring it in Monday. Said Chevy changed the frame in 2013 and that's when these problems started. Also GM rep said to get paperwork from first dealer.

1/14 picked up paperwork, RFB one tire and had no results of that. Have doc. Really!

1/18 dropped off truck at dealer next to me. 515 miles . Gave him paperwork and told me unfortunately they did nothing to it. Can't submit a claim to GM without results of RFB. Said he would do his best to fix this. Has delt with issue before and has a pico meter. Beyond nice person to talk to and explained in detail what he's gonna do.

1/20 dealer called and getting me a rental. Nothing said so far about truck. Will keep up to date with everything. Hope they can fix it. Really love this truck.. Lot more detail to story but trying to keep it short and to the point.

I see you live in CT. I have been dealing with the same issues as you, lets talk. I would like to know where you purchased your truck, where your taking it, and I can fill you in on my experience. I just got back my 14 Silverado Z71, 4th visit, RF balance, 2 tires failed, they replaced them, and after 15 days in the shop there has been no improvement. It has to go back in on Monday, very frustrating, but at least this dealer has been good to work with verses the dealer that I purchased the truck at.

Is thread specifically for tire/suspension vibrations or engine as well? Does anyone else have a problem with vibration (or perhaps a shimmy) during high RPMs? I don't WOT my truck that often but the other day I did and the vibration around 5k RPM was insane.

I don't buy the frame or stiff mounts as the reason some vibrate. I had a 14 built in Sept of 13 that had no vibration even at 100. My 16 has a bad vibration and it's not the tires or wheels. Maybe most 16's will be good but not all of them, time will tell.

    • Hey guys, sorry for the confusison about this. This wasn't my experainnce, it was copied and pasted fom the net. 
    • The problem with failure rates or increase failures are there’s people who don’t have a problem. What are you doing wrong they say. We had 4 5.7 GM diesel’s in the family when they came out. One was flawless. My uncle who happened to be the most abusive. Early rotary engines were known to use oil. I abused my first car so bad in six months I replaced the clutch, transmission and rear end. It didn’t use oil. My brother in law has a 2013 Tahoe and an older Yukon. The Yukon has 280K miles. The Tahoe around 175K. He runs them to about 300K. If his lifters fail before that time he would consider it a failure. My Hondas, I know people hate it when I mention them. Identical engines. One with cylinder deactivation one doesn’t have it. One shudders when the eco light goes on or off. Cylinder deactivation. But wait! According to the web. It can happen with lock up too. So now people in the know are changing the oil and transmission fluid more often. Then you read it could be a programing issue. So what do you do? There’s lots of money involved. I see three ways to deal with it. One only works if you don’t drive lots of miles. Lease, never get out of warranty. Or only buy older vehicles with a good track record. They all have bad runs. Usually when there’s a change. Even Toyota and Honda. 
    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.
