Meh, only difference in the consoles is rigidity. Nothing more than that. The less rigid the feature the more likely to develop some type of movement.

If it were that easy i would have a "flow through" console.

What i really mean by all of this is that i think a lot of people say they have a vibration issue because they can see the console move on the highway .. If you had the same truck but with a flow through centre console

would you even notice the vibrations ? i know before i had my truck fixed the floor and seats didn't really vibrate more than a normal truck but the lid for the fold down seat always shook like crazy .

Sounds a bit redundant but thought I just as well add my 2 cents. Have had my 2017 Chev. 1500 Silverado LTZ 4x4 with 5.3 since last year when I bought it new as a carry over with about 50 miles on it. It is a pretty truck and I couldn't figure out why it was still on the lot. I am beginning to understand why after reading many of the remarks on this thread.

When I first drove the truck, I told the salesman I felt a little vibration and thought the tires needed balanced. He told me he would have them balanced for me before purchase and did. The vibration I am getting is especially noticeable at first start after it has cooled off. It seems to improve at the lower rpm's after a few minutes of driving. I still notice some vibration at highway speeds that still feels like a broken belt in a tire or something but am now wondering if that really is what it is. I only have 5000 miles on the truck and finally asked the dealer about the issue at the first oil and tire rotation. He told me there was no service bulletins on the issue! (after reading this thread--I am not sure what he had been smokin before telling me that)! Anyway, I took it to another dealer who immediately told me there are known issues with the TC and he has scheduled an appt. for this next Weds. I will take it in on Tuesday night so it can sit and be nice and cool for the test drive in the A.M. He assured me that the mechanics are aware of the issue and they wouldn't need to put any diagnostic equipment on the truck but rather would be able to tell by driving the vehicle. Stay Tuned! Thanks for listening and any other thoughts are appreciated.

Well, just got a call from dealer telling me that they first thought it might be the transmission but they checked and the transmission had already had the latest programming had already been done on it so they looked further and put some new programming in the ignition control model but that he really wasn't thinking that helped but to "help put my mind at ease" the technician told him he checked everything out and that it might just be "the nature of the beast"!! Seriously???? Never even offered to change out the fluid in the TC or offer anything else!

Posted

Now I am told by dealer that the TC problem didn't apply to my 6 speed transmission-----tells me it is just the nature of the beast and happens because GM is trying to squeeze out all the mpg they can. My next step will be contacting GM directly!

Bought a 2016 Denali 6.2L 4x4 last week with 53k miles on it.  Shame on me, I didn't do an interstate ride as part of my test.  Took a road trip to go camping over the weekend and when I got to 73 mph it was pretty bad.  It got worse as I increased speed to 80 ish.  I immediately started thinking bad tires/balance, but a quick search revealed that it's actually a thing. ?

That led me here.

So...I'm guessing I have about 6k miles of powertrain warranty, and should hit up the local GMC dealer about it before I get to 60k.  I'm assuming a RFB or regular balancing of the tires won't actually do any good at this point and should actually look at the service bulletin for the fluid flush or check into getting another driveshaft to start.  If I can't fix this I'll have to dump the truck. We do too many road trips as a family to deal with this.  Which is a shame.  It's such a nice looking pickup.

Update for me:

Balancing the tires removed 90% of the vibration at speed.  Tech at Goodyear told me that all 4 were over 3 oz. out of balance.  He got them and and rotated them and I'm riding again.

I'm hesitant to say it's fixed but it's definitely much better.

This is how mine was when i was fighting to figure out what was causing the vibration . Balanced the wheels got a little better changed the axles got even better then was 100% gone with new driveshaft .

And what driveshaft did you end up using?

Had one made from a company called Pats drive-line I am in Canada so a lot of the american options are to pricey for me . 680$ Canadian i paid . 6" round aluminium one piece unit .

Checking back in after a weekend of driving and I'm definitely harsh vibration free under 85 MPH.

For what it's worth, the carfax I have for the truck states that the torque converter was replaced in 2017 on this truck with 25k miles on it at the time.  So I think I'm good on that front.  I just want to get the driveshaft balanced and checked out to get any further contributors to the slight issue remaining resolved.

From all the reading i have done i have not seen anyone re-balance there driveshaft and have it fix the vibration the issue is the driveshaft is made of paper thin aluminium and its full of cardboard . Because the driveshaft is so thin it resonates vibrations badly.

Hey Kyle - thanks for the advice.

I did hear from someone locally that took out their driveshaft and had a driveline shop do some analysis on it.  There was excessive runout in the middle of the shaft.  The shop put it on a lathe and made it run true.  Rebalanced it, and the guys vibrations were gone after that.  I was thinking about doing the same thing as far as having the machinist check it out.

Replacing with a high quality shaft is probably a good idea too, along with the upgraded axles.

The factory driveshaft is 1/8" thick i don't think you could machine it at all . The unit i had made is 6" diameter and 1/4" thick .

I've been following this thread for a long time, and thought I would share my experiences as well.

2017 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab - 35k miles

22" Wheels with Bridgestone Dueler AT's

I purchased this vehicle with 8k miles in 2017. I didn't notice the shaking/shimmy on my test drive. With my truck, it was only noticeable on smooth, long stretches. A lot of the highways around the dealership are pretty bumpy, and driving on them doesn't let the shimmy really set in. I could feel it at 40mph, on really SMOOTH roads. It was also bad around 70-80ish.

After about a week of driving it, i really started to notice the shake. I took it in 3 separate times and was told that the tech didn't notice anything unusual, and nothing wrong with it. I finally got really fed up with it and demanded a tech ride with me. I got one, and I took him to a section of roadway where I knew it would shake - he agreed something was wrong... Back to the garage.

I'll skip the rest and just tell you what they all did, over a period of time.

3 of the 4 tires were in the mid 30's for roadforce - I got 4 new ones (same Bridgestone Dueler AT's) - Still shook after that.

They found lateral runout on the rear axle - replaced left and right inner axle shafts - Still shook after that.

They found play in steering gear bushing - replaced steering rack - Still shook after that.

They replaced all shocks/struts - Still shook after that.

They replaced drive shaft - Still shook after that.

I drove it until my next oil change and when I brought it in, I asked if they had roadforce balanced the new tires when they mounted them, they did not. SO, I said do it on these new ones. 2 of the 4 new ones were in the low 30's again. Other two were 13 and 10.

Two more new tires, rf balanced at 9 and 11 - and its ALMOST completely gone. At this point I am going to just accept it as its almost non-existent and I'm so sick of dealing with it.

That is was GM hopes for ( to wear you down) Yes, they replaced the driveline. But when you replace Sh@# with Sh%^ you still have Sh#%!!!

I have been dealing with the vibration issue for several months now.I have a 2018 Silverado 5.3- 6 speed trans 2 wheel drive and I have 22,000 miles Mine is mostly felt in the steering wheel from 50 to 70 mph. The dealer started by changing the torque converter with no success. The next visit they changed my motor mounts and had no luck. The next visit they did the trans fluid flush and the road force balancing of the wheels and this last time in the shop they took the wheels off a brand new truck on the lot and did a lot of pico scope tests and they had my truck for two weeks They also road force balanced my wheels again. The service manager told me when I picked it up that all the pico scope readings were within spec and that there hands were tied from any further repairs This morning I got the number for GM and called them and they are connecting me with a senior service advisor to get my issue fixed By the way my truck vibrates exactly the same as when I first took it to the dealer

    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.
    • It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.
    • They’re not the same wiz as 10-15 years ago.  QC has fallen pretty hard.  The XP line was never good though in the first place.    https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/wix-filter-rusted-through.386492/post-6991372   https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/i-ve-used-my-last-wix-filter.27299/   https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/looking-for-a-better-replacement-for-wix-51258.403977/   https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/convince-me-in-using-the-purolator-boss.401537/post-7420147   the forums are littered with posts and examples of not great wix filters the last couple years
