RECALL - Fire Risk

odd. I got a message from my dealer on friday AM saying there was a recall on my truck. I called back, got one of the service guys on the phone, and he says they called "by mistake", the recall was for my 2011 Silverado (which I no longer own). Hmmm.....

Funny though I just logged into GMesi (GM's service info the dealers use) and couldn't find any reference to this campaign (recall) supposedly this thing is updated in real time so assuming they want their dealers to know it should have been in there. The only recent campaign was the fuel pressure regulator one that was dated 1/6/14 I referenced in the other thread.

Same here. I checked my Global Connect messages and saw the fuel pump one but not this one. Strange, from what I've noticed, GM notifies dealers first then the media runs with it.

And incidentally, I am still interested in getting the illumination issue squared away.

By illumination issue, are you referring to a check engine type light is on, or something else?

HOWEVER his forum had a link to the Detroit News Front page of Jan 10 that goes into more detail than the GM bulletin. Many may find it interesting. Including the reference to the issue of the vehicles being designed to idle on 2 cylinders! Yes I had to read that numerous times. Is this possibly another attempt to regulate the owner, pretty hard to warm up your truck in the cold if only 2 cylinders are running.

By illumination issue, are you referring to a check engine type light is on, or something else?

I'm guessing the backlit LEDs on the radio and HVAC knobs

Ouch...what if you have your car in the garage, start it up, and it burns the whole house down?

 

Well in the real world regardless of suspected cause, your home owners insurance would pay the costs up to the amount specified by your policy.

 

Any suspicions of your truck being the cause and GM being liable would happen way after the fact and would either be pursued by your insurance company and/or by you through civil litigation and if you are lucky and found in your favor, 3-5 years would have been lapsed between incident and payment by GM.

 

If the scenario as described happened, GM is not going to just pull up and write you a check. Fires are nasty things and vehicle fires are the worst. Just to say your truck was the source of a fire and burned down your house will not be good enough and GM will be lawyer'd up hard to have plausible deniability that something else near or by your truck caused the issue.

What would happen after your whole house burns down is you would probably use house insurance and live in a motel for awhile. Unless you are a house renter.

I find it hard to believe the trucks are supposed to idle on 2 cylinders. Our temps a week ago were below 0*F all weekend, the truck would never heat up idling on 2 cylinders!

Maybe they meant to say on 1/2 the cylinders. I could see that, but there is no audible v4/v8 noise when putting the key in after remote starting, or when shifting from park to D.

I think the two cylinder thing has to be wrong/a misunderstanding. These trucks still sound like V8s at idle and the very reason AFM doesn't work at idle is it proved to be too rough.

    • have you stuck with dealer oil changes since then? I made the same switch after getting tired of crawling around under the truck, but I’ve found some dealers are way better than others about getting you in quickly. Curious if yours has been good about scheduling or if you’ve had to look elsewhere for quicker turnaround.
    • Thank you.   I am set on a 3.0 Duramax as my previous truck with a Ford Ecoboost had just as many, if not more, "common" issues.  Cam phasers, timing chain issues, 10-speed valve body and CDF drum, emissions issues, etc.  So I figured, why not get 2x the fuel mileage (these things got 27+mpg on every mixed city/highway test drive I put them through) and better towing capability with resale value to boot?   My minimum, shortest trip will be 50 miles 1-way and I regularly go out of state with a travel trailer.  I'm planning on using this for a marketing/event promotion business also, which would require regular towing of trailers for bands, DJs, sound and lighting gear, along with my personal camera gear for filming events.   Looked at other trucks in the $30k+ price range but the issues seem to be everywhere, plus too many with gaudy mods.  I'm literally sticking with RWD trucks because they tend to be actually used as trucks, vs. the 4x4 models I've seen with unsafe lifts, huge tires, and general mods that would affect reliability (I'm wondering if some of them were tuned, hence the aggressive throttle response and hard shifting).   So my goal is to find a stock, 3.0 with 1 or 2 owners, in good physical condition, and decently well maintained.  Can't seem to find that up here, everything in the $27-30k range has had multiple owners, smoke smell, issues, or body damage.  Or the ridiculously modified trucks with 80k miles for under $27k but lots of problems...

    • Engine Wear and ISO 4406   1.) Cold Starts. 2.) High Particle Count. 3.) Low operating temperature viscosity and high low temperature cranking viscosity. 4.) Depleted AW, Friction and Acid packages.  5.)
