RECALL - Fire Risk

I still remote start mine everyday.

8 fires out of 300,000 trucks is .002666666667%. I'll take my chances. I have a better chance at getting in a car crash on my way to work and back home everyday.

What are the chances of my truck catching on fire when I'm at a red light and truck is idling?

Hi diannabill,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your vehicle concerns. The recall that you are speaking of is for certain 2014 full-size pickup trucks equipped with 4.3L and 5.3L engines. We do not have any specific information on if vehicles produced after a certain date are included or not. However, if you would like to send me your VIN, I can check in our system to see if there are any open recalls listed for your vehicle. Otherwise recall notices will be mailed to customers starting January 16th. I apologize if your dealership was unable to answer all of your questions about the recall, as General Motors has been working to bring all of our constituents up to speed. I hope I was able to answer all of your questions. If there's anything else I can help with, please let me know.

Thought the same thing. Mine always shows V8 mode at idle, so this is strange and hard to believe.

The thought of 2 cylinders carrying the other 6 at idle speed scares me ....

Sounds like a good way to build a 80k mile engine ... :ughdance:

It isn't. There is no way in hell a V8 will run smooth on two cyls.

This does not make a lot of sense. Why would cold climate and idle be more likely to start a fire than a vehicle in hot weather left idiling?? Sure seems to me that hot weather would create more under the hood engine temperature than cold weather.

What folks didn't leave their trucks idiling with the a/c on during hot weather??

Wish GM would release the information as what the cause is and how the intended to correct the issuie with only calibration changes instead of some part replacement. Probably will release that information on the 16th would be my guess.

It must be pretty serious for them to stop selling trucks. Also this would lead me to believe that the fix has not been issuied to dealers or the trucks on the lots would be able to be sold if they had the update completed already.

Sale stoppage is very common until units on the lot are repaired. Used to be when we got recalls at the dealer I'd spend hours on the lot doing updates so cars could be sold.

Hi, I'm new here, but just bought a 2014 Sierra with a 5.3 and was to pick it up today. The dealer called me this morning and said there was a hold on deliveries until the fix came out. They called about 5pm and said they got the fix and my truck was ready and it's now sitting in my driveway.

More proof that the fix is available and dealerships are doing it.

That's Great News!

Are you located in one of those extreme cold climates?

Western Pa., not usually that cold but we had -10s last week.

To those of you who get the update, please post if there is a noticeable change in drivability. I have code L83, if the update makes my truck run like s**t I'm going to pi$$ed.

My Sierra w/5.3L has been running great. Sips fuel, idles fairly smooth and starts in all weather, including -38c. I'm almost afraid to take it in for any change.

My dealer (Shreveport, LA) said they are "waiting on the software to flash the computer and it should be in late this week". Told me to call back towards the end of the week and schedule an appointment. No code though.

Having read your other post with the detailed questions and now their reply, it is just as I thought it would be, a canned response and a offer to look into your VIN.

These GM Customer Care people that post here are not going to go outside of an official script given to them and comment on anything not already publicly know. If one was to actually comment on more detailed information than already known, it would run like wildfire across the net and construed as an official statement by GM when it maybe not ready for prime time. That is why people should not lean on these GM Customer Care people to give them any info ahead of other official GM released media statements.

Recall number N140008 is for the "Overheated Exhaust Components" product safety recall related to these fires. I was told by two dealers to come in right now and get it taken care off. Looks like it was released 1/13/14 so it obviously just came out.

I also have the recall that needs to be taken care of for the fuel pressure regulator.....

I guess I am glad they are attempting to fix these things, but knowing what I know about modern engine control and GM being cheap that they are likely only going to derate/limit power to the engine in certain situation. It is a very standard way of eliminating issues such as these.
