DIY Bedrug

Recommended Posts

So I've put a scrap piece of carpet in the bed and I'm starting to kind of enjoy it. Along with the kids, who think it's a great place to lay down and play. lol

Has anyone attempted any sort of DIY bedrug? $400 is a little more than i would be interested in spending. I have a retractable cover already, so I was thinking maybe some marine carpet over top of some type of foam maybe?

What are you comparing to @ $400?

Sorry, this isn't DIY, but I would suggest a rubber bed mat like this for under $100:

https://www.amazon.com/Dee-Zee-DZ86972-Heavyweight-Feet/dp/B000VU7NL8/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1496760897&vehicle=2015-47-491-478-128-53-6--18671--8-1---6-0&sr=1-1&ymm=2015%3Achevrolet%3Asilverado+1500

I had one previously and I liked it. I am considering another one for my current truck. The only thing I don't like is getting dirt trapped underneath it. I currently just have the spray-in liner and i'm content with it for now.

Marine carpet could be nice to add some padding to the surface, but some things are more prone to slide around (think cardboard boxes). It really depends what you intend to carry around. I'd be afraid the carpet would also move around, roll up, etc.

My dad has a 1/2" plywood floor with cheap carpet stapled to it. He likes it, but whenever I drove it, stuff slides all over the place. I would not want that.

I see. If the full carpet coverage is really what you are after, I think it would be hard to get as good a fit by doing it yourself.

Do you not have a spray-in liner? If you had that, I would just lay a carpet remnant on the floor for cheap, but the spray in liner is $500, so that doesn't help you if you're trying to save money.

Personally, I put too much dirty stuff in my truck that I would hate cleaning the carpet out. That's why I recommended the rubber mat. At least with a cheap remnant, you can always remove it and shake it out.

I have the bed rug bed mat in my truck over the spray in liner. Fits great. Its basically the bed rug without the sides.

Took it out of my 2007 and it dropped right in my 2016. $105 at Amazon.

Edit:

The one linked above is for a drop in liner. Looks like the one for a spray in liner is a little more $159 at auto anything.

I have line-x, but i don't see why i couldn't use the bedrug mat that's for the plastic drop in liners instead? it should lay flat either way i would think.

I think it would work just fine. The only thing I can see is the one for the drop in liner looks flat and the one I have for the spray in is shaped to fit in the bed grooves.... if that makes any sense. But yes the flat one should work.

You know you can order just the bottom (bed) piece of that bedrug. You don't have to pay a full $400. $150 I believe and it has ridges that fit the groove on your bed so you don't bust up your knees.

That is exactly the difference. There are 3 different BedRugs/BedMats:

- The one that covers the bottom, sides, and tailgate.

- A single piece that covers the bottom only. It has a thin layer of foam and is flat on the underside. This one is made for drop-in liners.

- A single piece that covers the bottom only. It has a thicker layer of foam that is shaped to match the ribs in your bed. This one is made for spray-in liners.

Like others said just buy the "BedMat". It's the single bottom piece. It works great for when you want something soft on your knees and whatever you are hauling but you can pull it out easily if you don't want it in (BedRug recommends installing it with Velcro but you really don't need it).

NOTE:

Actually there are a few other BedRug BedMats too. If you really want it you can get just the tailgate liner or just the bottom section with the tailgate liner attached.

I don't think marine carpet will hold up very well if you use the bed much. Plus it holds water pretty well. I would hold off for a bedrug if it were me. Especially if just the mat is 100 bucks and thats all you're looking for.

Where did you get that information?

I just bought and got my Bedrug for $111 from ebay. LOVE IT!

Looks like it went up in price by $6.

I think you misunderstood my comment. Marine carpet bad, bedrug good.
