Tailgate cables different lengths

This is deja vu, guys. Read my link in the post # 11 on this page. These posts go back to 2004 when this problem surfaced. About 4 million GM trucks were recalled for this problem back then. Apparently GM did not take any steps to prevent reoccurrence.

BTW, this is a safety issue as the single cable holding the weight of the tailgate plus the load can fail under heavy load such as moving an ATV over the tailgate, then the load is transferred to the slack cable, which is then shock loaded and can fail. This can have ugly consequences and result in damage to the tailgate, personal injury, or worse. Do not ignore this issue. There is no excuse for this.

My 2004 had this recall done when it surfaced. I remember reading it on the GMVIS. It isn't new but nothing to be up in arms about. Just take it in

Was putting bed liner in mine and noticed the passenger side has to be at least 3/4"-1" longer with all the slop in it. 2 guys at 200# plus each and it never tightened. Did anybody find the 2014 bulletin on this? Hey GM customer service gang can you check on this for us and advise if we just call and get one that matches. I would think if the tail gate was open to the long length it would have some tilt and possibly hit bumper even?

Any resolution on this?

Mine are uneven and the dealer told me they were the same length and the box may be twisted but they really don't know. They did say this was the 4th truck but not to worry because the cables will hold? I would think you could bend the tailgate because mine, like other posters have said, won't pick up the slack.

All these guys must look nuts standing on their tailgates, in their driveway, waling about how the cable is not tightening. I can see it now.

I had this problem on my 2007 silverado. The right side cable was always under tension, the left side had some slack but would tighten under load. In 7 years of ownership it never was an issue. You'll be surprised how tough those cables are and how tough the bolts that they connect to are. I once had a 2000 lb pallet of water that was loaded into the truck with a forklift and about a third of the pallet rested on the tailgate before the guy could get it all the way in the bed. I realize it wasn't all 2000 lbs on the tailgate but it was certainly more than me at 185 lbs and she held up fine. Of course I overloaded the truck a bit which probably wasn't good.

I noticed this the other day on my double cab. Driver side cable is slack. Just to be clear - the dealer doesn't do anything about this ?

On my first 14, dealer ordered a new cable and it was still a different length than the other 2. I would tell them to order a pair. They even come special with "Made in China" all over them.

Try swapping sides. My passenger side has a touch of slack, but under load its tight. I'm gonna try swapping sides and see if there is a little difference in the gate.

If you swap sides, the cables will still be off and stick out through the sides of the gate when closed. They are designed for specific sides and twist a certain way when closed.

At least that was my experience.

You're probably right about that. Just figured they might be able to be trained to go the other way? I haven't driven my truck in about a week, or I would have tried by now.
