Fluid film does not play well with the gm frame wax. It will bubble it ,super soften it and break the wax adhesion to metal.

The wax will lose its adhesion with or without FF being applied. Hence why guys that have never even heard of FF have rust on their frames where the wax flaked off. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? I've been brushing FF on for 2+ years, according to you my frame should be nothing but rust at this point.

I talked to my dealership about my frame starting to rust away. They told they wouldn't do anything and to contact GM about it getting it fixed under warranty. Who do I talk to at GM about it getting fixed?

I went thru the same problem with my frame on my 2014 siverado cc sb and the dealer would not do anything so I emailed mary barra she is the top ceo of gm and the truck was taken care of within a weeks time and repaired the right way. [email protected]..

I ended up emailing this address: [email protected]. To which I was given a case number and told to take back to the dealership.

 

In the mean time I've been looking at frames of GM trucks in parking lots, at red lights, and at the dealerships. They are the worst in terms of other trucks I have seen. Seen some 14s with frames that looked like my old 2004 Ranger. Can't believe this wax coating is acceptable.

I went through exactly the same frame problem and the majority were the crew cab built in mexico and it was all do to frame prep before the wax coating was put on at the factory.I tried going thru customer

service which was a waist of time they just pacify you then I just got fet up and went for the top dog

to get some real results and it worked..

Anyone with a 2016 seeing problems? I have a 2015 that they stripped and coated with new, 6 months later it is still rusty. Looked at some 2016s on the lot, in the rear wheel wells the round cross members are all starting to rust. Trying to get out of my 2015 for transmission problems, but not sure I want a 2016 that is rusting already and probably still has the transmission problems.

Mine currently doesn't vibrate. Transmission is absolutely clueless, the pedals seem like they are just suggestions. Looking at the vibration threads, seems like the vibration issue is getting better, just frustrating because there is no for sure fix. At least they are working on vibration issues, the dealer is telling me that there is nothing wrong with my transmission and that it is my opinion that it is broken. Had the transmission try and push me into the back of a truck last week, sounds normal to me.

The frame treatment on our trucks is pretty disappointing. I noticed a co workers F150 has a nice shiny black painted frame and that made me kinda mad. Mines rusty and only 8 months old. I've been contemplating getting it looked at by the dealer but geez another f n issue. I'm probably not gonna keep it long enough to worry about it so I dunno...

I was going to take mine in but decided to just fluid film the rusted areas. Figured the dealership would just put the same shitty wax coating on again that will just start to rust in 6 months. The fluid film seems to like convert the rust and leave a film over it. My frame looks pretty good now and I'm happy with it.

 

Also the new Colorados appear to have a painted frame. Not sure why that doesn't carry over to the 1500.

I had a rubberized coating/bedliner material sprayed in the fall.

I'll share some pictures for what it looks like now after some harsh winter abuse. Honestly there's no other way to deal with the crappy factory wax unless you strip, rust proof/prime and then paint or do something like this.


This was applied OVER the factory wax and so far only small pieces of the rubberized coating have chipped off from debris but wax held intact underneath. It was a cheap process ($250 CAD) for doing the frame and underside of the body and it came with a lifetime warranty. Unfortunately for people outside of Alberta, seems like this is a niche product for a shop in Edmonton and cannot locate a place in the states or other provinces.


The metal parts such as the rear axle and front sway bars and A-arms were not touched, so I sprayed with fluid film and they have no hint of rust.

After 3000 miles my frame had several chunks missing and peeling off. It had a lot of rust. http://m.imgur.com/a/ctmp2

Similar issue with my truck - Started over a year ago. I had a Diamond Kote applied at the dealer when I purchased the truck as it came with a 10 year frame warranty - I noticed the Diamond Cote Peeling off down to bare metal - After numerous calls and e-mails to the dealer one of the servie advisors slipped up and mentioned the TSB to me - I then approached the Manager regarding the TSB and he told me they were working on a solution.

 

It took the dealer over a year to "build" an area to complete the work as it required harsh chemicals for peeling the wax coating off the frame. In the meantime he offered a temporary re-spray of the undercoating which I accepted to prevent any further corrosion during the winter salt months. Unfortunately they sprayed this directly over the road dirt and rust that had already accumulated.

 

Originally I was told the process would take 5-7 days as the frame had to be removed from the vehicle. To my surprise when the dealer contacted me to book it in they told me it would only take 2 days. I asked if they were still taking the frame out and they told me no - the TSB just required them to scrape the frame, treat it and re-apply a coating. I was hesitant but allowed them to complete the service.

 

When I went to pick up the truck I was shocked at the "quality" of the repair. They had only applied the diamond kote back over all of the rust and dirt and as far as I could tell did not do any prep work to the frame. What was worse is the entire top of the frame was untouched. not cleaned. not treated and not even covered in the Diamond Kote.

After I took the photos I went in to speak the manager who said I would need to leave the truck with them so they can take the bed and cab off to complete the repair properly. I then got news from him that they spoke with GM rep who only authorized them to repeat the process again however this time authorized an additional 3 hours to do it properly.
I was furious at this point and told him that there is no way to fix the frame properly without removing it and even then it is a gamble as the rust inside the frame and between the mounted accessories such as body mounts would not be touched and eventually bleed through the new coating...
They are now removing the cab and box to attempt the repair.
As of now I have zero faith this repair will last more than a year and as we have no lemon laws in Canada I am documenting the entire process and will be pursuing legal action when the rust comes through again.
Anyone else have this much trouble dealing with these guys? Or see such a hack job repair?

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
