Has anyone out there gone through the Canadian Arbitration process. Submitted all my paperwork almost 2 weeks back for my 2014 Sierra cc with the 40-50 mph steering wheel vibration. Truck received the usual RF balancing, complete rear end replacement and a new upper intermediate steering shaft, all to no avail. Gm engineer says operating as designed.

Those of you with steering wheel vibrations can you explain what it feels like? My steering wheel also seems to have a slight vibration if I place my hand on the center like where you'd honk the horn but maybe this is normal. Curious if this is what others feel or if its worse and can be felt more in the wheel itself where you'd typically hold to drive.

 

Are most of you running stock P series tires with the recommended ~35 psi? Or do some of you have LT tires running higher psi like 50+ (as I do)? Curious if this would make a difference in what is felt or if anyone has tried different psi to see if there is any noticeable change? Maybe tire psi doesn't make any diffence I dont know just trying gather as much info as possible.

 

I have a gas petal vibe and I guess you'd say a vibe you can feel in the seat at freeway speeds. Seems to intensify a little when going uphill. Mine will be going in to get checked out in about 2 weeks.

I don't see why there hasn't been a big lawsuit against GM on this issue . They are very aware of the issue and have refused to admit it .They have worked and worked on my truck and its still not right .

- I have the Goodforoneyears P rated here. Have the highway vibe issue. Full rear end swap out from driveshaft back. Suspension. Shimmed. Still vibrates. But one difference was in the winter, I live in Maine, it was extremely cold. So my tire pressure was low 30-32 and when heated up to 35. Barely felt any vibe. Now that its warming up, pressure goes up to 38-40 when highway speeds and the vibe at its normal. I'm pretty much letting these tires burn out then going to LT rated destination AT's. Don't know if it will help but its the only thing GM doesn't seem to want to change. The tires. And if they do, they just put more SRA's on it. Which everyone is having trouble road forcing. Others have swapped tires to different brands, and the issue remains. Not blaming tires/wheels in total, cause there definitely is another major issue, but they can't be helping. I mean I like my truck. I just think of it as a $45,000 v8 powered heated massage chair. That and the other brands have their own issues. All new means all new problems. Bought the all new Nissan titan in 2004. I'll take some vibe over that nightmare again. Ha. Toyota had the same issue few years back. Not sure if it was the tundra or Tacoma, but there is a video on you tube on it. A fake baby in a car seat. But,I guess we will find out the real reason in about 5 years or so when people are starting to hurt and gm is forced to fess up. Typical GM.

It feels exactly like a tire is out of balance, except that it's something mechanical.

 

I swear it's gotta be pretty common, I'm starting to think there's a lot of people out there that don't even realize it or aren't picky/don't care that there's a vibration.

You are correct sir,it has to be pretty common ,but the only people who notice it drive the highway everyday.My truck vibes only between 70-75 on certain stetches of highway with slight inclines or declines,usually with cruise control on.It comes and goes without warning,feels just like a tire out of balance.If i drive that same route going 68-69mph or even 75-80 i have no vibes.It is a mystery.

I could be completely wrong here, but I just installed nfab wheel to wheel Nerf bars today and noticed something. After the install, I jumped on the highway to run some errands and noticed my vibe has changed. Seems slower and less pronounced. The bars basically end and turn in right before the front side mud flaps on the rear wheels. Does anyone not have these flaps or removed them and still vibe? Are these things doing exactly what they are called? Flapping at 70 plus mph? The are pretty ridgid and could shake the bed I guess. Just throwing darts at the troubleshooting board here. Just asking in case it changes nothing. Don't want to try mine and bust em up by accident. Thanks.

So just got the truck back after another trip to the dealer. That makes 4 trips total. They've changed the rear drive shaft, no improvement. Previous trips include changing all four tires, road forcing and balancing the tires numerous times and rebuilding the rear differential. One of the higher ups at the dealership understands our frustration and has told us to try the truck today (we planned a two hour trip so perfect to try it out) and if it's not fixed, to essentially throw them the keys, he'll provide a loaner, and tell them not to give it back until it's fixed. Thank goodness he's on our side! This is looking more and more like a buy back case. My wife is tired of being jostled around in her seat.

 

Note: it's a Rally 2 edition with the 22" rims and low profile tires. They kept trying to tell us it's because the tires are "aggressive". Please.

They'll replace the rear end next or try new wheels. I've been there. After a month and everything redone including a complete rear end on mine GM and my dealer got me in a 14 ltz (one trim level up) BC I had an Lt at no additional cost.

So I have seemed to found my support group for distraught GM pickup owners that are experiencing vibration issues with their vehicles.

I have been dealing with a similiar issue with my 2015 GMC Sierra SLE Z71 4x4, Double Cab 5.3L with 4500 miles. I purchased the truck NEW in January as an "early 2015" promotion rebate, in NY and drove it to Texas where I have relocated.

When I bought the truck, there was a vibration that the dealer claimed was a "flat spot" on the tires from sitting on the lot for months (since August).

I figured it was plausable, or just stiffness of components that would loosen up over time.

Well it's been almost 6 months and 4500 miles later and I have noticed an abundance of other intermttent noises and vibrations.

All of which are unacceptable of a NEW "Professional Grade" $40K+ truck.

After about 1000 miles I would occassionally hear and feel a clunk from under the vehicle while driving at 45mph as the vehicle shifted into 6th gear at around 1200 RPMs

Then I began to notice a chattering vibration at about the same MPH and RPM on the same section of road in a village speed zone. This all occured in NY in very cold temps, near 20 degrees. This vibration was akin to letting out a manual clutch in too high of a gear. If I selected "tow mode" it appeared to happen less often.

Now for the more annoying and reoccurring issue....

The vibration or oscillation that occurs at 30-40mph. This also occures periodically at 65-75 mph when cruising on a highway.

There seems to also be a harmonic vibrationwhen hitting small "high speed" bumps at those speeds.

As an Electrical Engineer, I have experience in vibration testing and as a retired amateur superbike racer I am extremely accute to suspension dynamics.

I can not pin point this to a suspension component, but I can definitley say it is not a tire tread issue or a balance issue as the dealer claimed on my first visit,I believe it to be a drive train issue, either the Transmission, drive shafts, or Differential.

After my second trip to the shop they indexed the propshaft and reset the body to the frame. Neither fixed the problem.

I wish I could say it's hard for me to believe GM would put such poor quality out to it's dealers. But considering the shady buisness of the bailout, they don't care about the little guy.

I traded in my 2007 Siverado extended cab Z71 for this headache. Previous to that I had a 2004 Silverado extended cab Z71, Both were V8 5.3L 4x4 standard box. Neither of which vibrated

Seems GM's answer is to send out Picometers, measure the vibrations, and set the acceptable allowed vibration at a level to exclude most the vehicles that at a nuisance. In my line of work this is called "Derating your Spec" and it's a poor practice for poor quality

Is anyone starting a class action law suit? Seems there are enough cases

Early in this 400+ pages I reported a 40-50mph "tiny rumble strip" vibration (14sle dbl z71 tx edition) traced to the 3.42 rear diff ring gear which was badly out of specs. Replacement with a new rear end solved the vibration, and I've now got 14k vibe free miles behind.

Anyone know if the 2016 trucks will have design changes and use different parts? Being it is a known fact that GM used parts that were out of spec, have they learned their lesson and will the 2016 models be vibe free?

 

What are the odds of that?

 

Being I have had 0 luck finding a truck that doesn't vibrate, I am considering asking GM if they would allow me to do an MSRP trade with an upcoming 2016 Silverado.

Glad to hear! I replaced my SRA tires with Terra grapplers and now I have 15 k smooth miles

If I were a gambling man, I would bet NO. I doubt any supplier changes are going to happen in regards to the drive line.

Well all... You can add me to the list of Vibrators (LOL)... It wasn't noticeable to me for a while because I rarely drive High Way for I work 5 miles from home... My Truck was delivered from Missouri (Line in NJ) February and was a Demo Left Over 2014 with 1800 Miles... It was weeks after when I first noticed my Vibration between 70-75 MPH... I didn't think much of it and wrote it off to bad stretch of High Way... Well now that I have been Traveling for Baseball with the kids, and on different highways, It's not the highways... It's my 53k MSRP Truck with 3500 miles ;(.. So today I look on this forum and find 300+ pages of folks with the same issue... My Vibration is enough to make me feel UN_SAFE especially with the kids... If no one is in the front passenger seat while it's happening, that seat vibrates frantically like 1" and I can feel it in the steering wheel and pedals... It's almost like the Rumble strips on the sides of the highways but not as bad... Looks like I am going to get this rolling with a Dealer like most others have done...

 

When they rebalanced the tires was that covered under warranty or out of pocket? How anyone had their truck re-aligned?

 

Just wanted to add that my Truck has the Chevy 22" Wheel and tire option...

    • Very true.   However.  GM did give those trucks with the single speed case Terrain Mode.  Terrain Mode mimics 4LO minus the gear reduction and torque capability.  It uses the ABS/braking system to perform the operation.  It also gives these one pedal driving (sort of) when in Terrain Mode via the active brake during throttle lift.     Does it have its limitations over a true 2 speed case?  Sure.  But it works.         
    • Of course actually engaging four wheel drive is step one or even daring to use a ramp like that with a two wheel drive and getting into a mess because of it. As to 4 low, these last few years if its a GM half ton it may not even have low range. A lot of the newer pickups have a lot lower first gear in an automatic transmission then they once did as it was common at one time for a gas engine truck or even the older diesels to just sit there and bog the engine due to the torque converter stall point and not enough torque was generated on reasonable traction to even spin a tire or get out of its own way up a steep grade and 4 low HAD to be used to get enough power to four tires to get them turning. These days traction control systems may hinder a vehicle in a situation like that although that means a tire or tires are spinning so in some ways the traction control can reduce wild spinning and anyone can correct me on that but I think some vehicles cut traction control off in low range ?.    By the sounds of it and you may have the proper equipment but if your responsible for helping vehicles out if they are not able to get out under their own power, I would say to be using a nylon tow rope or have one available so that one is able to give a bit of a run to help sling shot them some initial momentum as most tow straps are made out of polypropylene and impart way too much shock load if used to jerk a stuck vehicle into motion but are totally fine to use if going more from almost a dead pull with the tow vehicle and they are a lot less expensive to replace if damaged. That and some soft shackles to hook onto closed loop tow hooks on the truck your pulling as well as you having the proper shackle insert in your truck so there are no bad accidents with metal clevises joining things together or chain on the end of a tow rope or tow balls being hooked onto etc flying and causing damage or worse if it lets go. Its always a challenge pulling people because some are clueless and will over run the tow rope or strap and drive over it or that risk of ramming into the back of the tow vehicle so usually a few instructions are needed to clue in the driver of the stuck truck. Yeah ... have fun out there 😉

TBN and ZDP levels matter. The one thing not covered was sufficient viscosity. Sad.     And yet we now have since API SN lower amount of them all with the only real change being a slight up tick in base oil selection. Along with lower concentrations of everything that makes oil work and lower and lower viscosity there is still an insistence on longer OCI's.    How low does the peanut butter and jelly level have to get before we say it's just white bread folded?    The new smoke and mirror treatment is the 'additives are INVISIBLE' to UOA testing with a health dose of TRUST ME.    I'm not picking on AMSOIL. This is coming from all of them. Every last one of them that abandon the low wear model in favor of the high mpg/EPA compliance model. 
    • First off use it in the way you’re more comfortable. In working in off road situations most of my life I used 4WD low range very little. In most cases when equipped I used auto 4WD. If I wanted maximum control going up and down very steep terrain  I used low range. Especially if I was driving a diesel. Same with very rutted terrain. In very muddy or snowy conditions I wanted momentum so high range worked well for that. With gravel ramps with limited traction I would try high range first. I would want smooth even increasing speed if I was fighting traction. Low range could give you too much to the wheels breaking traction trying to move. 
    • Having owned 4wd vehicle since the 1970s I find there are varying opinions on how to use 4wd, every owner is an expert in their minds.  IMO, 4LO is the appropriate gear and what I would use,  You have to feather the gas to avoid spinning tires and the lower the gear the better chance.  But like I said you will find those that think their method is best.  I live near a boat launch.  Yesterday there was a new Ford Maverick pulling out a pontoon boat almost 2x its size, they had no problems and they don't have a LO range.   True story. One winter day not long ago I was coming out of small town post office and there was a F150 4wd parked in front and was stuck foot deep snow ruts. I knew the lady so I asked her to put it in 4wd (wondering why in the middle of a 2-day snow storm she wasn't).  Her reply surprised me, "my husband" (the expert) told me not use that because it uses too much gas. She finally got unstuck spinning in 2wd which likely used more gas than not.
