Do you expect a rust free frame for a mere $ 45K?

You mean a mere $55k?

 

What i dont expect is the wax dip to be falling and peeling off like dead skin from a sunburn.

I don't own one, I have a 2015, but I have looked at several 2016s. All of them that I have looked at show signs of rust on the ends of the rear crossmembers that are exposed in the rear wheel wells. One 2016 that the dealer had used as a loaner during the winter showed rust on every weld visible in the rear wheel wells. Someone posted on here somewhere that the TSB for frame rust was updated to include the 2016 model.

Several years back but there was a video of the Arlington Assembly Plant (Big Suv's) and it showed them blowing ice of the frames and they were already coated because the next stop on the line was building up the frame. They were stored outside till the plant was ready for them. So before your truck was ever built, the frame was outside exposed to the elements for who knows how long. GM gets the frames from outside suppliers, always have.

 

Many probably thought GM built the frames in the same assembly plant as the vehicle.

Cosma International, part of global automotive component supplier Magna International, announced today that it will supply the frame assembly for General Motors' next generation of full-size light-duty pickups and sport utility vehicles. It's the third generation of frames that Cosma has been awarded on this platform by GM. The current GMT900 frame is pictured at the top of this post.

According to Magna spokesperson Scott Worden, both the pickup trucks and SUVs will continue to be body-on-frame. Last year, there were rumors that suggested GM's full-size SUVs could shift to unibody construction, like that used for GM's midsize crossovers.

"Receiving this third-generation frame business from GM is a real testament to our ability to deliver on key areas including cost and quality," said Horst Prelog, President, Cosma International. "GM is a long-term valued customer of ours and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them."

Cosma will produce the new frames at two factories, located in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada and Saltillo, Mexico.

I just returned from the dealer with PIO0564 version H in hand which covers 2016 vehicles for the same problem so they are obliged to fix it.

Unless GM has changed the frame coating specifications for their frame supplier, there is no reason to believe that the issue has gone away.

 

And changing the specs usually involves a contract change and this means spending more money.

I haven't seen any official numbers, but does this happen more on one body type versus another? For example, is it more frequent on Crew Cabs versus Regular Cabs? Does the assembly location have anything to do with it?

 

Also, when a person would get a new truck off the lot would it be of any benefit to have some undecoating treatment (like Zeibart or similar) done? Or is the whole point that the rust is underneath the spray-on wax? This is a little scary.

I wonder if GM just uses a more corrosive resistant metal than other manufacturers? These wax coatings don't seem to last more than a few years and almost seem cosmetic more than anything.

I have just spent 2 days after work sandblasting the shit out of all the rust spots visible from normal standing angle, spray painted with some rust protection paint.

 

I am going to just spot sandblast and touch up from now on to eventually get rid of all the wax shit

Hey Morris I thought I seem somewhere that you might live around or close to Edmonton? I could be mistaken.

 

There is a shop there that armaguarded my frame. It still chips in small pieces but for almost a year it still looks decent.

 

Any visible chips and I coat it with a rubber guard spray and it blends with the armaguard.

 

I would say to the rest here, don't wait for GM to just band aid your truck, you'll have to resort to a more solid coating or strip the frame and paint.

 

Will post some pics.

 

EDIT:

 

Right after the armaguard was applied. Was applied OVER the frame wax. I was warned it might still easily fall off but I am still impressed at the durability. Limited lifetime warranty as well which I would only take it back if huge chunks started to fall off.

I am in edmonton, I work for lakewood chev now in service, gonna be able to get the diamond kote tdon at a discounted price while I am at work.

 

I have sandblasted the most visible area like right at the rim of the coilover mount, sprayed it with matte finishing rust paint from princess auto. To be honest, looks brand new there. I did blast more area, it is pretty much all the way around the outer edge of he frame. Took me two days after work.

 

Truck will be on a hoist and they will spray diamond kote underbody coating which also adds sound proofing to road noise

    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.
