Agreed, even if the play worked out it would have meant giving the ball back to the Patriots with 20 seconds and two time outs. Not great odds, but quite possible to get back into field goal range and tie the game.

 

The defensive penalty on the ensuing play was the killer though, fundamentally unsound. There was a chance that the play would result in a Patriots' safety and Seattle would have gotten the ball back with a timeout. Talk about putting yourself in a hole and then shoveling dirt on your own head.
