Well reading all these replies about vibration problems I will just live with it! Doesnt seem to effect anything mechanical except the tach will shutter when the vibration gets steady. I’m planning to install a 6 inch suspension lift & 35 K02’s. Maybe I will fix the issue while I’m in there?

Axles replaced with yukon axles last week. The 40-45mph vibration is gone but the 75mph or so vibration is still there. Maybe not as bad but its definitely still there.

Well temperatures are above 0c here now finally so my vibration is back for the summer. I have noticed on our windy highways that sometimes it will be shaking then as you go around a sharp corner and straighten out the shaking will stop until the next turn. This is leading me back to the rear axle faces, like they shake when (the warp) is in sync, then as the one axle travels further than the other they find a point of balance momentarily before shaking my brain against my skull again. I never noticed it much in the winter months as either the body mounts and shock oil was stiffer than in the summer heat. Combination of shock oil, body mounts and a slightly out of spec axle face causing it all? I will try to source some axles from a wrecking yard and try it out. Hopefully I can get it dampened without putting any money into this junker.

Mine has 75k on it. It started shaking around 30k and has gotten progressively worse over the last 45k. I’ve gotten both sets of my AT LT tires road force balanced, 1 set on stock wheels, another on aftermarket (I use hub centric rings). I thought maybe the new coopers I got were the issue because they’re “blems”. But I put my Toyo’s back on and it still shakes. Also have a leveling kit. Shop and myself checked everything out in front end thoroughly. Nothing loose, no ripped boots, no traces of grease. 

 

I can add in that I wrecked at 27k and repairs included a full frame replacement. So the rebuild could also be a cause.  I’m lost.

New guy here, I have been reading this thread for a few days. I just bought a cherry 2015 with 27k and after a long highway drive I was like WTF. My console going crazy, SHAKING the hell out of the drinks and keys and what not. It starts about 68mph and gets worse to a peak of 75mph and reduces till about 83mph. Even coasting in neutral from 80 down to 70 it still shook so it appears to be in the rear end/driveline.

I would also come and go a bit. Hit a bump and shake away.

 

Well after reading I tried the simple solutions in this order and experienced a large reduction in the shake.

 

1. Road forced balanced the tires, I had just put new tires on it as well.

2. Leaf spring clamps from Autozone.

 

With the truck on lift, I placed the clamps behind the rear axle just at the point where the leafs started to gap a few millimeters. Tightened them down and then lowered truck to ground. Since the spring gap was slightly compressed now, I tightened the clamps a few more turns, effectively locking all three springs together. You do not want to go too far back because then you will run into binding as the suspension compresses and then rebounds.

 

Went driving....by my "seat of the pants" measuring tool, you can feel the reduction in the shake, and my drinks, while still exhibiting ripples, are MUCH better. It is bearable now for a very modest effort.

 

I definitely feel the issue is a resonance - the system of rotating parts working together at that range of speeds and allowing the frequency to transfer to the cab/etc. The springs themselves have a resonant frequency and by clamping them you are changing that frequency in the same way that a guitar string when fingered shorter now plays a higher note. Plus the added stability of a second clamp point and less wiggle between the springs.

 

I may consider shocks although that seems weird to me in this particular situation.

I have to confess that I seem to have solved my issue as well.  I have the 22" wheels and Bridgestone tires.  After 4 balancings at the Chevy dealer, I went across the street to a GMC dealer that I had prior experience with.  He took me in back and showed me a huge pile of these tires that they had taken off other trucks, and told me that the tires were garbage.  Then he road-force balanced mine, and told me that 2 were barely in spec, and 2 were so far out they couldn't be balanced.  So I paid for 2 new tires, which did not fix the problem, but it was better.  After a couple of months, though, it was just as bad.  I think these tires just fall apart internally.  So I bought a brand new set of 20" wheels, a take-off from a Yukon Denali, with Conti tires, and installed them.  And the shaking is gone.  Between the multiple trips to the dealer for balancing, the replacement tires, and the new tire and wheel set, I have spent at least $2500 trying to fix this.  GM has not really provided any help beyond paying for one of the balancing sessions.  This has been incredibly disappointing, but at least it is over.  Maybe....

If you like try the clamps about 4 inches in front of the rear axle. I tried the clamps on mine behind the axle and the ride was worst. Have had the clamp in front of the axle for 30k miles.

Hoping it stays.  My service guy (the honest GMC guy) swore to me that the Bridgestone tires were the problem, and that I should replace them with Michelins.  But if I did that, I would be sending the nice new tires along with the truck when the lease was up.  We'll see.  Not all of these problems are on trucks with 22" wheels and Bridgestones....  But mine seems OK for the moment.

What's going on guys.   Been doing a lot of reading about the vibration issues on these trucks.  Mine seems to be a little different than the "chevy shake" that a lot of guys have.  I've got a 15 Denali 6.2 8 speed that I bought last October, it currently has 48,000 miles on it.  Immediately upon buying it I noticed some terrible vibration and bumps through the wheel that I knew were not normal (this is my 5th GM Truck).  Naturally I started researching on the various forums and found plenty of threads and suggestions.  The problem is most of the suggestions seem to be for a constant vibration at a certain speed or situation.  My issue is a pretty short but intense vibration through the wheel that rattles the dash and surrounding area, but most times doesn't seem to make the entire truck vibrate or shake.  It's most intense between 45-55 mph but I can feel shaking though the wheel at other speeds too.  The strangest part of the issue though is that after I first bought the truck and noticed the problem, it suddenly went away after a few weeks (honestly I can't remember how long it was, but it was sometime when the weather started getting colder.)  So I hadn't had the issue in about 3 months and then driving home from work yesterday, BOOM there it was again.  Doesn't make much sense to me...  I've seen some mentions of guys having the power steering bushings replaced under TSB, other guys mention the hydraulic body mounts could be causing it???  I don't know but I figured this is a good place to start as I'm sure some of you guys have actually read all 800 pages of this thread and maybe can make some suggestions or most likely culprits.

 

It's really pissing me off because it makes it frustrating as hell to drive, and I love the truck but if this keeps up I won't be able to keep it.

Torque Converter;  had the same problem around 32,000 miles.  There’s an SB out on it.  Dealer did the service.  No problem since.

OK, filed with BBB last Friday and have a case number, now I am to send in any and all supporting documentation

within 10 days.  BBB has 40 days total that also is binding to GM.  Got a call yesterday from a GM rep in Texas.

He asked ordinary questions as to buy new,  current miles, dealer bought from, what dealer I took to about the

shake and vibration problems, etc.  Have paperwork from 5 trips (2 Chev dealer, 2 another Chev dealer, and 1 to GMC dealer).

GM rep will call back May 8th after gathering info from all the service departments. 

BTW, I bought a like new 4000 mile complete set of 18's (from 2016 Tahoe) with GY Assurance to do my own troubleshooting

and probably made ride 10% better (taller sidewalls).  Problem still exists!

 

A few pages back someone got $$$$$ and kept his truck.  Never found out the bottom line on that settlement.

    • Replace the fuel pump with an OEM AC-Delco.
    • Hello, first time posting here. I have an 03 Chevy 1500HD with the 6 liter gas engine. The truck ran fine until the fuel pump died on me and had to get it towed. Replaced the fuel pump with a precision pump from O’rileys and changed the fuel filter while I was there. The truck will run and drive now but it wants to idle around 500 rpm when in drive and it tries to stall if you touch the gas. It drives fine though, just doesn’t want to idle. Put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail and only have 50 psi. I guess these trucks should have 55-62 psi to run right. I thought the regulator might be the issue because when I would unplug the vacuum hose it jumped to 56 psi. Replaced the regulator and no change. The only thing I can think of is that I was sold a faulty fuel pump. Any help would be appreciated because I’d rather not have to take the bed off again if I don’t have too. Thank you!
    • I've been wrenching on GM trucks for 17 years. And I need to get something off my chest because it's been weighing on me for a long time. After all that time, all those motors, all those people standing in my bay, I've figured out there are really only two kinds of owners. The ones who already know about this. And the ones who are about to find out the hard way. A guy came into my shop a few weeks back in a 2018 Silverado 5.3. Sharp guy, maybe 35. Knew his truck cold. He'd been on the forums, read the threads, done his homework. He only rolled in so I could double-check a little module he'd already plugged in himself. Wanted a second set of eyes on it. Ten minutes, in and out, drove off happy. Two days later, a completely different story walked through the same door. Older fella this time, in a 2016 Sierra. Gorgeous truck, clearly babied, not a scratch on it. Wedding ring. Looked like a guy who took care of his stuff. He was in because his engine had started knocking on the way to work. And by the time I got the valve cover off, I already knew it was too late. Lifter collapsed. Cylinder 5. Camshaft chewed up. The whole top end shot. Same kind of truck. Same motor. Same roads, probably the same dealer. The only thing separating those two men was information. I've been at this since 2008, and I've worked on everything GM puts out. Silverados. Sierras. Tahoes. Yukons. Suburbans. Escalades. The 5.3 and the 6.2. Doesn't matter which badge is on the tailgate. They all carry the same problem. So here's the information one of those guys had and the other one didn't. It's called Active Fuel Management. AFM. GM started building it into their V6s and V8s back in 2007 to squeeze out a little better mileage on the highway. Maybe a mile or two a gallon. All to hit government fuel economy numbers. The way it works, the motor quietly shuts down half its cylinders when you're just cruising along. And the little lifters that pull that off have a tiny pin inside them that's constantly clicking in and out. Lock, unlock, lock, unlock. Hundreds of times a drive. Thousands of times a week. Eventually one of those pins wears through. The lifter drops. And it starts grinding the camshaft down like a chisel on butter. And what nobody tells you is that the shudder you feel around 40 or 50 mph? That's the system cycling. Every single time. Here's what really gets me. The pre-2007 trucks, the ones without AFM, they're bulletproof. I've got customers still daily driving them with 260,000 miles on the odometer. Not a problem in the world. GM took a perfectly good motor that would have lasted a lifetime and bolted this system onto it. And it is wrecking engines that should have run forever. The guys who hang around the forums already know all of this. So do the techs. They handled this years ago. They didn't sit around waiting for the dealership to mail them a warning letter, because that letter is never coming. It's the guys who figured somebody would've told them who end up on my lift. And I want to be clear, because this part matters. Maintenance has nothing to do with it. I've torn down motors with barely 30,000 miles on the clock. I pulled apart a Tahoe last summer with 24,000 on it. Practically a brand new truck. Owner had it less than a year. Spotless oil. Best synthetic money can buy, changed early every time. Made no difference. I've seen guys with full dealer records, every interval stamped. Made no difference. The oil changes were never the problem. The pin was. And no amount of babying that truck stops that pin from cycling every single time you drive. That's the part that eats at me. These are good motors. Take the AFM out of the equation and a 5.3 or a 6.2 will run 300,000 miles and never blink. So a few years ago I started telling every single owner who comes through my doors the exact same thing the smart guys already knew. Get yourself a FullForce disabler. It plugs right into the port under your dash. Couple of seconds and you're done. It just tells the computer to leave every cylinder running, full time. No more cycling. No more beating those lifters back and forth every time you turn the key. It doesn't reprogram anything. Doesn't touch your tune. And unplug it before a dealer visit and there's absolutely zero trace it was ever installed. I've had customers come back at 40,000, 60,000, 80,000 miles after I put one in. Zero issues. The trucks run smoother. And the lifters aren't getting beaten to death every single drive. I won't sit here and tell you it's magic. A lifter that's already damaged is a lifter that's already damaged, and this won't un-ring that bell. But it takes away the one thing causing all that wear in the first place. That's the whole game. You don't need a five-thousand-dollar delete. You don't need an expensive tune. You don't need to tear anything apart. You just need to stop the cycling. I'm not writing this for any company. I'm writing it because I'm tired of watching the guys who didn't know pay four and five figures for it. I'm tired of being the guy who has to break the news. I'm tired of knowing that the guys who did know fixed the whole thing for the price of a tank of gas, and the only difference was that somebody told them first. If you drive a Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, or Escalade from 2007 or newer with a V6 or V8, you've got AFM. You've got those lifters, and they're cycling every single time you drive. So be the guy who already knew. Not the one I'm scraping metal out of next month. EDIT: A bunch of folks asked, so here it is. The one I put my faith in is FullForce.     • Thanks for following along. I'm not author material, my tenses are all over the place and an editor would have a heck of a time cleaning up after me. Reading and writing is still a fun pastime though.   My new scanner came in yesterday, wow, where the heck has this thing been?! It connects right up to the Blazer, there's all kinds of bidirectional tests like EGR activation and percentage, toggle the fuel pump relay, EVAP purge valve, IAC control, AC relay, reset the transmission's adaptive learning, toggle shift solenoids and TCC lockup, and I can reset fuel trims with the click of a button...all things I could have used over the last 60 days!   It's also telling me there is a stored code in the ABS module for front left wheel sensor open and something about the brake switch. The ABS dash light works. It illuminates normally during the self-test at key on/ start and that's it. I cleared the codes and will see if they set when I take it out later. That, and I'm going to get (hopefully) real data on timing and cam ******. The PID's are there.   I connected the tool to my truck...holy smokes. Newer vehicles make early OBDII vehicles look like 8-bit, pixelated, early Nintendo stuff. This? This is like wearing 3D virtual reality goggles playing one of those elaborate, cinematic video games with seasons and plots in comparison. There are SO MANY modules and SO MANY tests and SO MUCH data. There's a scanner sequence for filling the coolant...   End of the day, it's a tool with way more power than I need, but the versatility to do old and new is there (and I need an adapter to connect it to my OBDI Camaro). It will allow me to do the first pass of diagnosis when out-of-warranty vehicles need help, and it will enable more DIY maintenance like brake system bleeding, ABS bleed, etc. I probably over-bought here, but, mission is accomplished.   Enjoy your Sunday...I need to shut this machine down and go get ready for the week ahead.
