Nitto Terra Grapplers or Trail Grapplers?

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

Recently seen a truck in town with the Nitto trail grapplers on a 2014 Silverado and they looked sweet. The owner wasn't around so I never got a chance to ask him about them.. They looked like they would kick ass anywhere off road but may not do so well in the fuel milage department.. I've also heard of Nitto Terra grapplers that are supposed to have a less aggressive deep tread but are designed with highway driving in mind.. Any ideas or suggestions from people who have them?

I have a 2014 Sierra All Terrain that didn't come with all terriain tires which sucks.

Anyone have either of these tires? If so, just a couple questions please...

- how is your fuel mileage since you changed tires?

- how is the road noise?

- and most importantly how is the handling/feel?

- and lastly approx how much per tire?

Sorry for all the questions but I have an appointment for this Tuesday with a tire shop who has quoted me $260 per tire balanced/nitrogen filled/installed. Im in Canada by the way, do you think that's too much?

Tire size is 275/55R/20. Can/should I go with a bigger tire?

Enough of the questions, I know but I seriously do appreciate any insight or recommendations any of you can offer.. I thank you in advance, much appreciated...

Thank you and have a great weekend..

I live in Montana so I see similar weather to you and I would recommend the terra grapplers not the trails for highway and snow.

The trails are great in mud/sand/gravel they don't clean well in packed snow. As for road noise and feel they are both great tires and feel good the trails do have a light hum on highway but not annoying. without a lift/level I wouldn't go to big you may rub. All info is based of my friends 14 Silverado not mine I cant afford new tires yet. hope this helps...

He has 33-12.50 on 22's with 3.5 rough country

I really enjoyed my terra grapplers on road but the were terrible off road through any kind of mud or clay. I've got a friend that loves his trail grapplers. He's had them a year and so far so good. Also seen a tundra at the tire shop the other day replacing his trails with 70k miles on them. Still could've probably got a little more from them

Sorry I'm biased but imo BFG KO A/T's, a dealer had a truck almost exactly like yours with a 2" level kit and it had the 20" painted style oem rims not the cheesy chrome ones and bfg ko's with the letters out and it's the best looking 2014 I have seen yet.

I have 285/55/20's Nitto Terra Grapplers with no lift on my 2014 High Country. No rubbing. The 285's are a 10 ply tire so maybe a bit rougher than one of the sizes that are not.

The Trail's are going to make more noise on the road than the Terra's.

On Nitto's website they have charts that give you scores on quietness, ride and such.

Do your tires hum? I am ready to get rid of my duratracs because of this.

On my friends truck the terra's make very little sound and with triple sealed cab no worries :driving:

For the most part, no they do not at least in my opinion. (let me qualify this by saying they do not hum as much as other comparable tires with aggressive tread)

If you keep them rotated and they wear evenly they are not bad at all IMO.

If you get bad wear they can.

On my 2008 I had three sets over the life of the truck. First set almost 90k miles, second set 80k miles and the last set before I traded out of it about 20k.

My last truck was an 06 1500HD and I ran several tires over the years. The Nitto Terra was my favorite because it was a good balance between road and off-road. I never had a problem in mud with them. My new truck is a week old and Discount Tire just put a new set of Nittos on it today. My last set on the 06 held up very well so it was no brainer.

I cant answer on that specific tire...but wanted to comment on Nitto. Excellent tires! I had Nitto Crosstek's on my last truck and got over 50,000 miles from them. they were excellent on both tar and off road. I'm anxious to yank these GY's off and put Nitto's on this 14.

I had Terra G on my 2011 and liked them a lot. I thought the ride/wear was nice and the were more quiet then the Bridgestone that I took off. Snow traction was average. With the new 14 I took the GY LS2 off IMMEDIATELY and put on Michelin LTX MS2. They are one of the best tires I have ever run. Obviously not in the category you are looking at but I have no need for such an aggressive tire anymore.

    • Whoever greenlighted the work truck matte black front bumpers on every trim but the AT4X should be fired!  I was hoping that was an AI mistake, but just realized they were on every model of the 2027 Silverado too.     Some parts of the interior do look premium, but the Denali Ultimate dashboard looks like an afterthought.  At least they appear to have lost the microfiber the high end Silverado models showed, but the '27 High Country dash looks better than the Denali.
    • New member here. I am researching a read-first event-recorder concept for late-model GM V8 trucks. This is not a sales post. There is no product link, price, preorder, or mailing list. I am trying to determine whether the underlying problem is real before building anything.   Has your truck ever had a brief problem such as: - rough running or a momentary misfire - an oil-pressure warning or unusual pressure event - reduced power or a brief stall - a U-code or lost-communication problem - a symptom that disappeared before the dealer or independent shop could reproduce it   If so, I would appreciate the following details: - year, model, engine, and mileage - what happened and under what conditions - whether a DTC and useful freeze-frame data were stored - whether the shop was able to reproduce it - what the eventual confirmed repair was, if known - what additional information would have helped the diagnosis   The concept being evaluated is a removable leave-in recorder that continuously retains a rolling window from before and after an event. It would not tune, reflash, clear codes, or change the vehicle calibration.   I am also not claiming that it could predict lifter failure or see every internal ECM variable.   The real question is whether continuous event history would add enough useful evidence beyond freeze frame, GDS2, and existing scan tools — or whether it would simply be another unnecessary gadget.   For owners and technicians, which problem would make something like this genuinely useful: 1. intermittent misfire or AFM/DFM-related behavior 2. oil-pressure events 3. lost communication or electrical faults 4. none of the above Please be blunt. Negative feedback is just as useful as positive feedback.
    • No tears over the SLE and SLT trim levels disappearing but I kind of loathe the "Elevation" name. It's a truck--skip the elegance.   The slab-dashboard design is decidedly different. Almost has a Hummer flavor to it. "Professional Grade" seems to be leaning very white-collar, tech-driven these days moreso than blue-collar, functional design.   The Silverado would be my choice between the two new trucks. Pleased with the engine lineup in both. The GMC is a little "too much" for a truck, IMO, and the Denali borders on ridiculous - but I do know there are buyers for luxury trucks out there. It's just not my speed.

    • - I like the outside but not as much as the Chevrolet.  They ICE'd the EV styling and it works, but I think exterior goes to Chevy on this one.     - SLE and SLT dead = Not.  Surprising.  Fits into the rest of the GMC lineup like this which (aside from Pro) matches the rest of the family.  Elevation, AT4, Denali.     - Interior.  Sophisticated Malaise era.  Why do I say Malaise?  Drawn with a ruler.  Rectangles everywhere.  Looks very premium though.
