lets get this clear for any new guys going right to the end.....they are not going to fix your truck. tire issue...lolol. I asked them from the beginning " do u have any trucks that don't vibrate?" after a perfectly practiced shock face, they picked one.. I told them to switch rims and tires. even offered to pay for labor to eliminate the argument then and there. was done - truck acted the same. mines a '14 and still hearing problems with even the newest ones. don't forget - this is gm - they will let people die before recalling a major issue ( ignition ) so... u think they care about a vibe? - u got 2 choices - live with it - or go directly for a buy back. this has been going on for years.

Oh, I didn't see the 1500 sub-forum, was coming in from a search result in Google. Well that gives me hope that my case might be easier to fix. Now I feel bad for all you 1500 guys.

 

GM really needs to get their quality straightened out. I also own a Vette... total nightmare.

It doesn't matter, put it in here as well, maybe we can try and narrow it down one day when we have all the Suv's and trucks in this thread. Combine it all.

I own a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE Crew Cab 5.3L z71 with p265/65/18. No vibration when I initially bought vehicle new. @20k miles I took vehicle to dealership for oil change and they found nail in rear driver side tire and offered to patch tire. After they patched tire there was vibration at 75mph. Took it back to dealer and they said it would be $49 to balance tire. Told them to forget it, I'll try to stay below 75 and wait until I get some new tires. @27k miles I still had the vibration at 75 mph until I took it to dealer again for oil change and tire rotation. Vibration is now gone. Seems the rear is more sensitive with proper balanced tires then the front.

 

Hope this helps somebody.

I have a 3 week old 2017 LT Z71 DC with 1400 miles on it and Good Year Duratrac's of the same size (265/65/18). I have no noticeable or concerning shake. Knock on wood. I regularly cruise the highway at various speeds from 55-80.

Is it known to be less of an issue with any particular tire size?

I disagree. I think the way GM can ignore the un-fixable vibration is aided by every possible shimmy, shake and vibration being lumped into one bunch. So far as I've read there are at least 3 distinct problem vibrations with this platform beyond the issues that can affect every make (like unbalanced tires, bent driveshafts, etc..

I had number 3. Had, being the operative word because I have a rockstar attorney that successfully sued under lemon law. I'm done with GM for now, but will keep checking back to see if they ever get this sorted out. If it didn't drive me mad on long trips I could have really loved my 16 CC ltz-z71. It had a very nice interior, superior electronics package, and the 6.2l coupled with the 8spd transmission had me consistently achieving 25-27mpg on the highway.

 

By the way, has anyone been able to get their service department to give them a readout of the pico scan? And beyond that, document the numbers vs. whatever 'Spec' is? Too many people I know are being told 'it is performing within spec' and when pressed, the dealership will not give numbers.

In regards to the pico scan, I like you, was unable to get a readout from the dealership. I also found it peculiar that they mounted it to the rear seat and called it a day. I explained it was mostly felt through the steering wheel and pedals, even had the service manager agree on the test drive but a day later after leaving my vehicle he seemed to have gotten amnesia after speaking with the higher ups and retracted his statement.

 

At this point in time after mounting my GoPro underneath the truck I can see clear as day the driveshaft at the transmission side is dancing around and even flexing under load pulling the rear of the transmission along with it. I removed my driveshaft and took it to a reputable driveline shop and he explained to me that the overall design of the driveshaft is junk. As well as it not being balanced, it is way out of spec in regards to straightness and is even oval shaped. With the swedge design at the ends of the shaft the out of round high and low spots as well don't even match up with the highs and lows on the main 5" section. There is no way to fix it and have a legitimate shop warranty it so I pulled the trigger and have them building me a new 5" straight shaft with spicer joints for $650. I am picking it up this afternoon and will follow up if its a successful story.

yes. Check the criteria for your state. It will need to have been in for repair for the same problem a certain number of times OR out of service for a certain number of days. Just be prepared for the process to take a very long time; I was driving loaners for 90 days out of the first 5 months before talking to my attorney. The suit took 4 months and could have taken longer if GM decided to go to court instead of settle.

Take your driveshaft to a machine shop, for an hour of labour they will spin in up and check the balance, $75. GM will not help you. For example, say only 200,000 trucks total are affected, likely much more but for estimate sake. If the remedy was found to be replacing the driveshaft, yoke and u joints, the parts cost is roughly $500 per unit. That equates to $100,000,000 before labour. Add 1 hr of labour at industry average of $75. Total warranty program cost $115,000,000 GM is not going to do anything about it until people start crashing and getting hurt.

I actually did this. Interestingly, the shop stated they typically accept a tolerance of 0.005" or less deflection at 2200rpm to be the number they aim for when balancing a driveshaft. Mine measured out to 0.0005". "dead on the nuts" was his exact words. No dents, out-of-roundness or defects of any kind.

 

This problem has taken up so much room in my head for the past 10 months I'm thinking about all kinds of odd possibilities. Maybe it is actually an aerodynamic problem? Seems everything from the transmission back through the tires has been ruled 'in spec' or better. Heck, I even received new shocks as they had 2" of dead travel, suspecting they were introducing the problem. (obviously they were worn out after only 9k miles of dampening a horrible shake) But if this truck is indeed super light and ridged, maybe as you drive at highway speeds, typically in the 70+mph range, there is enough downforce to start oscillating the onto the suspension. I can drive on the same stretch of road day after day, some days it's shaking so hard I'd feel nauseous. Other days it is smooth as glass. Most days are in the realm of "this COULD be the road" but I know better. Maybe this is at least partly explained by wind speed and direction.

 

Who knows.. not my problem any longer :D Now I just need to forget about it this unsolvable problem.

The issue isn't them joining an F-150 forum, they typically do. But as soon as they let everyone know that they couldn't stand the vibration any longer and opted out Mook will get back up on his soap box and let them know what a horrible mistake they made lol You tell'em Mook !!!!

 

But those of us that have opted out can't stop watching this train wreck of a thread. I'm on my third new vehicle since I opted out and if it were not for this issue those three all would have been GM vehicles. But I will never buy GM again.

People still buy that F'N ecoboosts and nothing has changed about their CRAP either.....

Actually they did change the ecoboost. I researched the h*ll out of it before getting one. The major issue of condensation/water forming was resolved with a changed intake

 

The problem is more pervasive than you wish to believe. I'm not sure what makes you the subject matter expert. Are you a GM employee, engineer, or mechanic? Pointing the finger back at Ford, Dodge or Toyota doesn't make the vibration problem go away. Nor does it excuse Ford for the problems with the fecalboost motor. I didn't buy the fecalboost because I heard bad things about the early revisions.. gotta be careful with every make and every redesign. I went with the 5.0L V8 to avoid the new 10 speed tranny they have. Didn't want the 3.5L w/10speed and the 2.7L wasn't an option for me. And yes, brace yourself, GM is working with Ford on this 10 speed tranny design. Imagine that? Who knows what kind of crap they'll spin up here! What will the fanboys do now that they share transmissions?

 

Btw, the 5.3L is a nice motor. I actually agree with that. Its rock solid, very capable. Its the stuff they put around it that is the problem...

 

Back to the topic: there is a problem with this platform and that's a fact. How many have the vibration is unknown. Jury will be out until 2024-2027 and we get ten years of history to look at. I know at my dealer, the service rep readily admitted that there were alot of truck that had it and that GM didn't have a fix. He looked like a man that was sick of toeing the party line, which tells you he is sick of lying to customers. Its a big dealer and they do alot of business, for what its worth.

 

There are plenty of us out there that spend good money and expect a decent ride. Yes, its a truck and will drive like a truck. But vibrations like this are totally unacceptable. I'm sorry that some can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that this problem exists... but it does. If you had the vibrations, you would not like your truck, I almost guarantee that. Almost, because some say they can live with it... or they don't drive 80 mph. So they don't care.

I agree with you, mine is the same way, some days the same road in the morning it will shake a little but not on the way home and some days it wont in the morning and it will on the way home, sometimes it starts at 72-73mph and sometime 77mph, i can watch my roll up cover on my bed while its shaking and it is fluttering in the same manner that the shake is. Not saying its the problem for all, but in a lot of peoples case sure it is, because when everything is good that rotates it has to be air flow/air density.

    • not all plugs will be used.  gm uses more generic harnesses that support most/all options, and if your truck doesn't have a specfiic option, the plug won't be used (commonly will have a dummy insert in the plug , or it'll be taped up, but some may just be left as is).  But it's sldo possible some p.o. has installed the wrong/cheaper parts that aren't correct for your vehicle...
    • First off, I'm not trying to just get easy advice/fixes for the issues I've noticed so far.  I'll be combing through the site via searches and such, and if past experiences are any indication, should find what I need.  For the sake of conversation, though, I figured I'd post the handful of things I've noticed in the 12 hours since buying my 2010 SLE CCSB.     Indicator lights: Airbag and TPMS.  The tire pressures aren't reading for any of the wheels, so I'm pretty certain the sensors were either removed, are damaged, or are otherwise inoperable.  I used to mount and balance tires 25 years ago but am pretty much ignorant when it comes to TPMS.  My 2006 didn't have the sensors and this might be the fourth vehicle I've owned that does.     Radio: Rear speakers aren't working.  I removed the driver's side rear door panel and checked the speaker and wiring.  I also removed the sill and b-pillar covers to check the wiring.  A few minutes of Google Fu showed that this is potentially a head unit issue.    Switches: Power mirrors don't turn left/right.  I ordered replacement driver's door switches that should arrive tomorrow.  The windows and locks work but it was only about $20 for all of them.  The driver's side rear window switch lets the window down but won't put it back up.  I think the passenger rear doesn't work at all.  In the coming days/weeks, I'll break out my multimeter to check all of that.   Unknown wiring harness: There's a box attached to the front driver's side of the engine compartment, right where the second battery shelf is located.  There are three plugs, one of which looks like it fits a standard headlight-style bulb (9007 or similar).  It doesn't look like it's plugged into anything.  I'll do some digging and if I don't see anything elsewhere on the site, post some pictures here.   Unknown plugs on brake booster: There are at least two female plugs on the brake booster that aren't being used.  I think it might be a replacement/aftermarket, so maybe those are used for a different application, as there don't seem to be any unplugged harnesses and no indicator lights are on.   Little squeaks when turning: Sounds almost like a bushing around the bed of the truck.  I'll have to pay close attention as I get more familiar with the truck.   Clunk on acceleration: possibly the infamous drivetrain clunk.  My 2006 had it and I'm just not familiar enough with this truck yet to fully grasp what it is.   Anyway, my apologies for the vague and all over the place post.  This truck is new to me, and it's been four years since I drove my 2006.  With 200k miles, I know I'll need to learn this truck quickly to avoid having any major issues, despite being confident it's got much more life to it.  My 2006 had nearly 320k on it when I parked it (nearly 300k of which I put on the truck), and it was still drivable then, though I suspected the head gasket might have blown.  I'd hoped to have that truck back by now, but it's gone forever, as I detailed in my reintroduction thread.  
    • I always drive in Sport mode. With more driving, I am finding the initial response when accelerating is much quicker now🖕 Lou

    • My initial introduction was here.  It's hard to believe that I last posted in February 2013, having just deployed to Kyrgyzstan.  Since then, I've retired from the military and the 2006 Sierra SLT Z71 that first brought me to these pages was lost.  I went forward to Afghanistan in March 2013 and did a lot of sitting behind a computer on brigade staff.  Within 18 months of getting back to the States, I was selected for Drill Sergeant duty, after which I moved back to Virginia (my home state and where I served from 2004-2008).  That '06 Sierra did a lot of driving between Louisiana, Georgia, and Virginia, and ended up with nearly 320k miles by 2022.  By then, the registration had been expired for a couple of years, but the pandemic had all but eliminated tickets for such transgressions.  Admittedly too, I usually drove my wife's SUV or son's car the 2-3 times a week I had to report to work.  Teleworking sure was fun while it lasted.   I started my retirement leave four years ago and stored the Sierra at my sister's house.  A big mess was made when her fiancé passed while she was taking care of business out-of-state in late-2024, and his son pretty much mismanaged everything to do with the estate.  Even so, I was assured that my truck was safe... until it wasn't.  I found out that my truck had been scrapped about four months after the son took over everything.  There's nothing I could do; I'm 1000 miles away and it was technically abandoned property since he'd even trespassed my sister from her own house (she had no claim to it as she wasn't married, and the fiancé was the sole owner).     Anyway, today I got my second Sierra.  This is a 2010 SLE 2WB CCSB with a little over 200k miles on it.  It's got the 5.3L I'm familiar with and should handle what I need it for.  Hauling stuff that won't fit in the Transit Connect (yep, I sold out, but that's the wife's vehicle) and towing a few times a year tops.  The price seemed decent, considering how much people sell their trucks for in the Deep South: $4500.  I've seen similar trucks listed for more than double that.  I got it from a coworker who left his tag on until we transfer the title next week (Louisiana requires a notary for transfers), so I've been driving it all day.  The rear speakers don't work, which is one of the things that brought me back to these forums earlier.  I can't say how active I'll be as a poster, but I'll be scouring the archives while I find out every little thing I can about the 2010s and particular nuances/problems with my truck.   It's definitely not a GMC, but I got another Willys Jeep a few months back as well, so I'm almost at the same place I was when I first joined gm-trucks.com.  My old 1960 DJ3A was sold back around 2010 or 2011; my current Jeep is a 1946 CJ2A.  So, I've got a slightly newer GMC and a much older Jeep.  I kind of wish I still had that F-250 I had way back when too.  The Dakota is long gone and was technically my brother's truck, though I had it registered and insured.  The F-250 had to go when my grandmother's house was foreclosed on due to mismanagement around 2012 or so.     Hopefully anyone that made it this far isn't too annoyed.  I tend to be long-winded, but I'll be doing more reading than posting in the coming months.
