Hey Pop, I didn't know you were on here!  LOL

My father never maintained his cars once his boys got old enough to do it for him but he neglected to ask us often.  His '80 Olds 88 froze up and wouldn't start, it had been 34,000 miles since its last oil change.  I forget how much gas and oil we poured in and out of that motor to get it running again, but we did!  We started putting his cars on Mobil One after that.  Years later I caught him at 23,000 between oil changes on his '93 Olds but it was fine, Mobil One.

Y R U here then?

3K Group I/II fluids on the used and well worn high milers I use as 'salt cars' and  I'm not sure of the history on.

5K and Group III  fluids on the ones I'm sure we will trade. I.E. wife's cars. Nobody I hate enough to treat like he who eats 2 much.

5K and Group IV/V fluids on the keepers and collectors.

I have a used truck I want to sell.  It's got 40k miles on it, really cherry.  Interested?

Come on, man.  It was a joke.  Although there are a lot of people out there like that, and it is worth remembering that whenever you consider buying used.

On my new stuff, I follow the owner's manual and get the oil changed at a shop.  On my old junk, I do the oil changes myself.  I use use zinc additive and cheap 5w30 in the flat tappet 396, and VR1 10w30 in the hydraulic roller Pontiac 505.

On the one truck i have that has it, I have been going by it. Try and do it before it reaches 5% if have the weekend off. Other trucks i ran to 5000 max but between 3-5000 was average time. 88 K2500 i hated doing because oil filter laid on side and couldn't fill up all the way so every time i started after filter change was just watching pressure gauge....

The reason the oil filter lays on its side is because it doesn't circulate through the filter before it goes through the engine.  When the filter is mounted vertically, the pump sends oil directly to the filter then through the engine itself.  When its mounted horizontally, it goes through the engine first then to the filter.  It wouldn't be bad for your engine at all to run with this filter dry.

Well I know how rushed these trucks were built and designed to get out on market. Worked at chevy dealer when they came out in march or april of 1987. And this filter housing was just a bolt on adaptor to where the filter would have been a vertical. Just a vertical filter would have been hit by the drive shaft to front differential.

You sure they redirected oil flow?

My dealer gives free oil changes, tire rotations and batteries for as long as you own the vehicle. I bring it in when oil life gets to 20%

I did some research and up in Canada I could only find mobil 1 0-20w with the dexos certification. I change at 5k miles and use gm filters. I wanted a full synthetic oil and the mobil 1 was the only one I could find. The oil life indicator shows around 50% when I reach 5k miles. I don't think it has a viscosity meter built in and goes off mileage but I don't know for sure.

Hey Gear head, I used to live in Calgary.

Can def see why need a 0-20W oil up there. Is that showing as miles or kilometers on odometer? Guessing it depends on if truck was sold in Canada originally or US.

it's in km. So I change @ 7000-7500 km. And summer with towing I will watch the level and see but so far no consumption. I added a catch can also and am waiting to see what comes out of there.

I change mine between 3k and 4k

As far as the filter...we all have filter we trust - mine is Wix when its not GM

I have never heard of engine failure due to changing oil too often, but I have heard of failures related dirty oil ( and less than acceptable filters)

Additionally, With GM's Dexos requirement - this helps eliminate some bad choices for the uneducated, as many cheap oils were too readily avail in the past.

I don't know if I stated it before, but I change my oil sooner now because I have some miles on the truck...oil used to be just a dark brown when I changed it at the OLM 0%, now it's black in the first thousand miles and I change at 5k mile intervals. Not that oil color has any indicator of oil condition, but it's a nice round number.

I also change my wife's car's oil more frequently in winter because she idles a lot at the bus stop waiting for the kid. I do 5k in summer and 3k in winter...oil has a lot of fuel odor when changed.

Typically not. I usually change mine about 5,000 - 7,000 miles.

The indicator on the family old 2008 Yukon Denali with the 6.2 would seem to be all over the place.  We always went with conventional oil and filter at 3k intervals.  Sometimes we would still have 70% of the oil life remaining.  Other times it was 40%.  It didn't always seem to reset correctly after an oil change.  Engine ran great and didnt burn or leak at 105k when we traded it in.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
